All you need to know about HTTPS certificates - non-tech friendly

In the world of web security, HTTPS is the gold standard for protecting data. However, when you go to secure your site, you are met with a confusing alphabet soup of acronyms.

This guide breaks down everything a non-technical founder or website owner needs to know about SSL/TLS certificates.

The "Trust Levels": DV, OV, and EV

Not all HTTPS certificates are created equal. They differ based on how much "vetting" the Certificate Authority (CA) does to prove you are who you say you are.

DV (Domain Validation)

  • The Vetting: The CA only checks if you own the domain (usually by sending an email or checking a DNS record).

  • Trust Level: Low. It encrypts the data, but it doesn't prove who is behind the site.

  • Best For: Personal blogs, small sites, and internal tools.

  • Cost: Often free (e.g., Let's Encrypt).

OV (Organization Validation)

  • The Vetting: The CA checks your legal registration and physical address. It confirms the business is a legitimate legal entity.

  • Trust Level: Medium. Users can view the certificate details to see the verified company name.

  • Best For: Business websites that collect non-sensitive lead data.

  • Cost: Moderate ($50 - $200/year).

EV (Extended Validation)

  • The Vetting: The "Gold Standard." Rigorous background checks on the company’s legal, physical, and operational existence.

  • Trust Level: Highest.

  • Best For: Banks, large e-commerce sites (like Amazon), and government portals.

  • Cost: High ($200 - $1,000+/year).

The "Coverage Area": Single Domain vs. Wildcard

Once you pick a trust level, you need to decide how many addresses the certificate covers.

Single Domain Certificate

  • Scope: Protects exactly one domain.

  • Example: www.example.com.

  • Note: Usually, a certificate for www.example.com also covers the "naked" domain example.com.

Wildcard Domain Certificate

  • Scope: Protects a main domain and all of its first-level subdomains.

  • Example: *.example.com. This one certificate covers api.example.com, blog.example.com, shop.example.com, etc.

  • Why use it?: It saves money and administrative time if you have many sub-services.

We provide IT installation services for either single domain certificates ($30) and wildcard domain certificates ($100).

Essential Knowledge for Non-Tech Users

Beyond the technical specs, here are the "unwritten rules" of HTTPS:

  1. Encryption vs. Legitimacy: A "Padlock" only means the connection is encrypted; it does not mean the website is safe. Phishing sites often use free DV certificates to look "secure." Always check the URL.

  2. The "SEO Boost": Google gives a slight ranking boost to HTTPS sites. If you are still on HTTP, your SEO is actively suffering.

  3. The 398-Day Rule: Currently, no major browser accepts a certificate with a lifespan longer than 398 days. Even if you pay for a "2-year plan," you will have to re-issue and re-install the certificate after the first year.

  4. Mixed Content Errors: If your site is HTTPS but your images are still being loaded via http://, the browser will show a "Not Fully Secure" warning. Everything must be moved to HTTPS.
